“The Beast also forced everyone to receive a mark on his right hand or on is forehand, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man’s number. His number is 666.” (Rev. 13:16-18)
What is the dreadful number in the Book of Revelations? How can a simple number be so powerful?
The idea of what the 666 could be hit me one day when I realized how the 16-digit number on my credit card allows me to do many things so conveniently. Then I realized that the mark of the beast could be a global identification system plus perhaps more features. The number is not a specific number but “man’s number” which I read as a distinct number for each man. The “666” could mean three six-digit numbers such as “123456-123456-123456” which would be long enough to count each person and corporation on earth for quite a few generations. All these information and capabilities could be in a tiny sub-dermal implant.
The current system of credit cards has many holes for criminals to exploit consumers and banks. The way to avoid credit card theft is to hide the numbers from viewing and have a supplemental authentication system that can be transmitted electronically. By separating the identification system (the numbers) and the verification system (any versions of a “signature”), an extra layer of protection is created.
Ideally, this identification system should be combined with a tracking system and telepathic verification capabilities. This combination could reduce crime dramatically. Imaging if every store has this system. The minute someone tries to rob the store, his identification is picked up by the security system and transmitted to the police. If the tracking system based on the global positioning satellite (GPS) technology is implemented, his location can be tracked by the police immediately. Or suppose someone tries to rob a person at gun point before an ATM machine, and asks that person to withdraw the maximum amount of cash possible. The person allows the ATM to scan his ID, and when asked for his “telepathic signature,” he thinks the following statement in his mind: “I am being robbed at gunpoint, please release the cash but also inform the police.” The ATM would release the cash as if nothing has happened, but at the same time it could scan the robber’s ID and forward all the information to the police. Knowing this capability at the ATMs, one would have second thoughts about robbing anyone there.
Some of these technologies are already being developed, but would we use them, knowing how the government or corporations could one day use these to control our lives as the Book of Revelation suggests? Chances are, we would accept these “trade-offs” if they offer much convenience and extra protection from criminals. We still surf the web even though we know someone could track our web usage and use it to get commercial gains. We still write e-mails even though someone could intercept these e-mails. If one day crime is really prevalent and our lives or economic well-being are threatened constantly, we would probably accept such an intrusive system…
