Initially given as a sermon at Chinatown Church of Christ
In this message on the Parable of the Wheat and Tares, we wrestle with the reality of being hurt or disappointed by others—even within the Church. Why doesn’t God remove evil right away? This sermon reveals God’s patience and mercy, showing that He is giving people time to turn back to Him. At the same time, it reminds us that judgment will come, and invites us to reflect deeply on our own hearts and our walk with God.
This is part of the series on the Kingdom of God parables of Jesus. This parable is similar to the Parable of the Fishes and it will be studied comparatively in that parable’s sermon.

The Parable of the Wheat & Tares
Scripture: Matthew 13:24–30
Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ ‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”
Sermon:
Have you ever been hurt by someone in church and wondered, “Why is God allowing this?” Why doesn’t God just get rid of evil or fake Christians and wrong teachings in the Church right now? Could it be that this is all part of God’s plan?
Today we continue with the Kingdom of God series. We will study the second of the seven parables in Matthew 13. “Kingdom of God” is not a place we go — it is God’s rule taking root in our hearts and transforming our perspective and how we live.
The Seven Parables of the Kingdom of God: The Four Soils, Wheat & Tares, The Mustard Seed, Yeast in the Dough, Hidden Treasure, Precious Pearl, The Fishes.
Last time we studied the Parable of the Four Soils, which tells us the four types of people and how they can all receive the Gospel. The path is the hard surface where seeds are eaten immediately. The rocky soil has no depth, so plants die from lack of nutrients. Thorny places choke the seeds with worldly distractions. The good soil allows roots to grow and bear fruit. All three bad soil types can be turned into good soil by God with the help of caring Christians.
Today we study the Parable of the Wheat and Tares. The question is: Why doesn’t God remove the evil and fake Christians inside the church now? The answer from this parable is that God allows good and evil to grow together for now so that more people can be saved.
Weeds take up nutrients that could have gone to growing the food crop, thereby possibly reducing crop yields. Tares are a kind of weeds, and they look like wheat until they both reach maturity. Farmers would carefully take out tares before they sow the seeds because tares take up nutrients needed by wheat, and removing them later risks pulling out wheat.
But the enemy threw tares into the field to deliberately hurt the crops and reduce the harvest. The farmer has two options: remove tares while growing, or remove them at harvest time. Jesus teaches that they should be removed at harvest time to avoid damaging the wheat.
The field represents the church where both true and false believers exist. The enemy is the devil, who wants to lead people away from God and destroy the Church. Wheat represents true Christians, and tares represent false Christians with evil intentions. Both exist in every church, and the devil uses false Christians to harm true believers.
2 Corinthians 11:13–15 tells us that false apostles disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, just as Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Tares can make people intoxicated and sick; they symbolize sin. False Christians can lead others away from God. It is often difficult to distinguish them, just like tares and wheat during growth. It is easy to appear godly while hiding true intentions.
However, at harvest time, the difference becomes clear. Wheat turns brown when ripe, while tares are darker. Similarly, the best way to discern people is by their fruits. As Matthew 7:17–18 says, good trees bear good fruit, and bad trees bear bad fruit.
Can false Christians repent and become good? In nature, tares cannot become wheat, but God can transform people if they are willing. God allows people to choose; He does not force them. The time before final judgment is a time of repentance. Our God is a God of second chances. Revelation 3:20 reminds us that Christ stands at the door and knocks, waiting for us to respond.
God can also use negative elements within the church to help true believers grow. But at the final judgment, evil will be removed to prevent further harm. God does not want people with evil intentions to inherit eternity.
A farmer removes tares after harvest to prevent people from being harmed and to keep tares from contaminating future crops. The question is when to remove them. Removing them early risks damaging wheat. Removing them at harvest protects the crop but requires more work later.
When people try to judge others in the church, it often causes harm. The Bible teaches us to let God be the judge, because we do not see the heart, but God does. James 4:12 reminds us that there is only one Lawgiver and Judge.
God’s choice shows His patience. He waits and does more work later to ensure the best outcome. The church, like fertile soil, can sustain growth even with some tares present. Before judgment, God gives people opportunities to repent, as stated in 2 Peter 3:9.
God can transform sinners by giving them a new heart, as described in Ezekiel 36:26. God is the ultimate judge who sees clearly. Some who appear godly are false, while some who seem ordinary are genuine. We should not be discouraged when false Christians prosper; judgment will come.
At judgment, tares will be removed and destroyed. God is the one who separates and judges, not us. History shows that when Christians try to judge others, it can lead to tragedies such as the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch Trials.
We are called to be patient and let God judge. However, when wrongdoing is clear, we should confront others with love and evidence, following Matthew 18:15–17. Conflicts should be handled within the Christian community and not through public shame or revenge.
God is patient, but the harvest is coming. What will you be — wheat or tares? You do not have to be perfect now, but your heart must be right and seeking God. Micah 6:8 calls us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
To God, your heart and intentions matter more than achievements. Matthew 25:21 reminds us that faithfulness is what God values. Some of us may have started as tares, coming to faith for the wrong reasons.
God is patient, but the harvest is coming, and there will be a separation. The question is not what we say we are, but what we are becoming. If you are unsure, repent and ask God to make your heart right. God is loving and gives you time and choice, but do not delay, because you do not know when your last day will come.
“God has promised salvation to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.” – St. Augustine
See you all in the wheat storage in Heaven.
Additional info not used in the normal sermon deck:
All farmers have one goal: make the most money by producing as much good produce as possible. Therefore farmers must ensure good quality, maximize crop yield, and accomplish both at the lowest cost possible.
One of the biggest problems is weeds in the fields, which could reduce crop quality and production.
Tares’ official name is Lolium temulentum. “Temulentum” means “getting drunk” in Latin. Tares take up nutrients needed by wheat, and there is a risk of accidental removal of wheat when trying to get rid of tares.
