Special Project: Christmas 2000 -- Fundraising Ideas

10 Days With No Video Games

All the money from the sale goes to our Ethiopian child sponsorship.

Rules

1. You can choose 10 consecutive days (i.e. no skip-the-weekend tricks) to do this.
2. For each day you go without video games, the sponsor agrees to donate $0.50.
3. If you finish all 10 days without video games, the sponsor will donate another $5.  So if you do only 8 days, you get $4 (8x$0.50=$4.00), but if you do all 10 days, you get $10 (10x$0.50+$5.00=$10.00).  A sponsor may choose to sponsor for more than $0.50 per day.  It's up to them to decide how much they want to sponsor per day and for completing all 10 days.
4. These count as video games: any game you play on the computer, TV screen (e.g., PlayStation, Nintendo, Dreamcast, etc.), hand-held device (including Gameboy and cell phones), or any similar machines in an arcade.
5. These are not included: any video games you have to play as part of school assignment or class work, non-video-based toys (e.g., Barbies, Legos, etc.).  Lego Mindstorms robots or other robotic toys don't count as video games even if you have to program them on the computer.
6. You need to find sponsors BEFORE you begin.  I suspect that most parents would be glad to sponsor you.  If you cannot get any sponsors at all, let me know.
7. If you are the kind of kid who doesn't play video games at all, you can still sign up and see your normal lifestyle rewarded.  If you can't play video games because you are grounded, you cannot participate.  Your punishment should not be rewarded.
8. We have an honor system.  There's no need to get your parent's signature.  God knows what you do in secret, and your conscience will bother you, believe me.
9. If you accidentally played a video game because you just forgot, you can do an 11th day to  replace that day you failed.  You can only do one replacement day.  If you fail in two days, you cannot replace the second day by doing the 12th day.  Also if you plan on doing the replacement day, you must not play anymore video games after you realize that you accidentally played.  If you keep on playing, then you are not sincere about facing up to that mistake you just made.

10 Days With No TV

Book & Toy Sale

All the money from the sale goes to our Ethiopian child sponsorship.

Rules

1. You may bring books for sale.  No books inappropriate for children are allowed.  Books that I cannot find a good price to sell online will be sold at our book sale.
2. Books will be sold for $0.25 each unless they're hard-cover or especially thick.  The buyers must agree to donate the book back to us if they don't plan to keep it and read it all the time.
3. You may bring toys in new or very good conditions for sale.  You should decide on a price that's reasonable.  New items should be priced slightly below what they sell for in stores.
4. You may bring toys and music CDs in new or very good conditions for sale.  You should decide on a price that's reasonable.  New items should be priced slightly below what they sell for in stores.  You cannot bring in your own illegal copies for sale (e.g., a music CD you copied with your CD-R drive or a CD with songs you mixed from several CDs).
5. Some items may have quantity restrictions (e.g., two Gundam models maximum per person.  Please don't ask a friend to buy for you.  I want other kids to have a chance to buy the things they want also.
6. We will start selling at 12pm on Dec. 10.  If you are in my class and you do bad things, you get punishments of one minute per unit of punishment.  For example, if you got 7 units of punishment, you cannot begin to buy until 12:07pm.  This means that your favorite items may be bought by the time you can begin.  Also if you do well in class, you also get rewards of one minute per unit.  For example, if you have 5 units of rewards, you can start buying at 11:55am--before others can begin.  But you must promise me that you are not buying up things to sell to others for a higher price later.  You also cannot buy things for people who have to wait longer because of punishment points.  You can buy for yourself and your siblings, but not for others outside of your family.
7. All sales are final unless the product is already defective when you first open the box

Giving Your Best

We will bring the donated toys to a local orphanage.

Rules

1. You can pledge to donate one of your three favorite Christmas gifts BEFORE you get them.  Once you get the gifts, you cannot pledge to donate AFTER you get the gifts.  The whole point is to take responsibility for something you promised.  Don't promise anything unless you intend to keep it.
2. Please don't donate any clothing that have specific sizes.  Scarves and other items that do not have very specific sizes are OK.
